The great children’s books used in class and the engaging instructional materials you’ll receive make this program enjoyable and effective. Materials are provided by the Institute of Reading Development, a leader in reading development curriculum for more than thirty years.

Long Word Decoding

This self-paced workbook gives students a boost over the summer, teaching the skills and strategies they need to read long words. Students learn to recognize prefixes, suffixes, and syllables and use these word parts to decode long words. Students apply these skills in exercises that are fun and productive. Long Word Decoding For Third Graders includes an introduction for parents and easy-to-follow directions for each lesson so that your child can complete the workbook at his or her own pace after the program.

Reading Development Booklist and Book-Level Assessment

This program makes it easy to select the right books for your child by providing you with two important tools: a Reading Development Booklist and a Book-Level Assessment. The Reading Development Booklist contains hundreds of titles of children’s books divided by level of difficulty, as well as a section of chapter books for reading aloud. The teacher will also provide you with an individualized Book-Level Assessment to help you select books at the appropriate level of difficulty for your child throughout third grade.

Children's Literature

When children do a lot of independent reading, they develop the skills and confidence that lead to a lifetime of reading for pleasure. In class, your child will read great children’s books carefully selected for this program. You’ll also receive two books to keep, which your child will work in at home.

Program Guide and DVD

The Program Guide and DVD provide guidance for completing the weekly home practice and explain the goals and methods of the program. After the course has ended, you’ll continue to use the Program Guide and DVD as an ongoing resource to support your child’s reading development over the next year
